Having a story is great, but sometimes it is difficult to separate the fact from tall tale. Here at the Real Stories Podcast, we are committed to exploring the truth and presenting a first person account of how it all went down. From the burning of Colonial Crawford to the wreck of Lake Central Flight 527, all of these stories deserve to be told.
But sometimes a story...is just a story.
My journey to becoming a historian was more complex than The Cones of Dunshire. I started my collegiate career in 1995 and finally finished my B.A from The Ohio State University in 2018 focusing on the transportation systems that made up the Ohio frontier. Riveting stuff, if you're a transportation fan.
Through a series of life choices that could only be compared to 6-or even 7- Degrees of Kevin Bacon, I earn my living as a System Safety consultant for rail transit systems and state government oversight programs. For those in the know, I'm an SSO. I travel often for work (perennial Hilton Diamond and Delta Gold, fwiw) and spend most of my time crawling around the bowels of the New York City and Boston subways, but also some in Seattle, Portland, Chicago, Cleveland, and Buffalo as well, not to mention almost every streetcar system in the United States. I'm not really a foamer, but I know what they are, and most foamers would be super jealous of the access I have to these exciting places. Have you ever seen the abandoned subway station under New York City Hall? I have. I've also walked through the oldest subway tunnel in North America.
Graham and I have talked for years about fiction vs. truth in stories. Stories are an essential part of communication throughout history, but there has to be more than just the "they say" to them. An ounce of truth? Perhaps. But mining for it is arduous work. That's where we come in. Through this podcast we will try to present the information as unbiased as we are able and allow the listener to decide. We also do some interviews with local people who have stories worth telling, so if you are interested in first-person primary source on an obscure individual from the Wyandot County area, our podcast may be worth mining.

My winding journey through academia formally ended in 2016 with my Master’s Capstone “Lesson Through Lyrics,” an extensive look at the music of early American political culture with suggestions on how the lyrics could be used to help students better understand history. My coffers are filled through my generous salary teaching CCP Early American History as well as Psychology, Sociology, and Local Historical Studies in my hometown in north central Ohio.
I fancy myself a pycho-historian (yeah I said it), channeling my two passions (history and the human mind) with my endless search for truth and understanding of the past, especially as it relates to the present. My years of teaching experiences, research in the humanities, conversations with my colleagues, documentary film consuming, and arguing with my friend Brian have brought me to this point…a Podcast about Real Stories throughout America.
My mission is simple- I want to explore, document, and save America’s Real Stories in an entertaining and respectful way while paying homage to truth as well as belief.
